NEW True crime documentaries to watch this month
Mindbending documentaries that you won't want to miss
The beginning of 2024 has brought us countless true crime documentaries already. Here are three options that are bound to keep your mind spinning.
Quiet On Set: The Dark Side Of Kids TV (Max) – Out March 17
Quiet on Set digs deep into the insidious environment fostered by Dan Schneider and his staff, including allegations of abuse, sexism, racism, and inappropriate dynamics with its underage staff and crew. Schneider is known for working on the hit Nickelodeon show All That and later creating popular shows like Zoey 101 and iCarly. After the initial trailer for the four-hour docuseries was released online, a follow-up trailer ran which revealed that former Nickelodeon star Drake Bell will break his silence about being sexually abused as a 15-year-old child actor.
I have been looking forward to this one since it was announced. If you were a fan of I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jeanette McCurdy, then this series will be right up your alley.
The Program: Cons, Cults and Kidnapping (Netflix) - OUT NOW
The Program: Cons, Cults, and Kidnapping arrived on Netflix on March 5th. This three-episode docu-series follows the students of The Academy at Ivy Ridge as they narrate the true story of the horrific incidents that took place at the school. The Academy at Ivy Ridge was located in Ogdensburg, New York. It was a therapeutic boarding school that was functional from 2001 to 2009. The school enrolled troubled teens and offered a structured environment aiming at addressing behavioral, emotional, and academic issues.
This documentary is out now and is on my list for this weekend. I know someone who went to a scared straight program, so I am curious to see how their experiences compare.
American Nightmare (Netflix) - OUT NOW
This documentary explores the abduction case of Denise Huskins and Aaron Quinn, as well as the subsequent media circus that followed when the police and FBI accused the couple of faking their kidnapping. The story was reported as a real-life Gone Girl case. There are tons of twists and turns to keep you questioning everything until the end.
This one intrigued me because of the mention of Gone Girl. I think this seems to highlight an important topic in a lot of cases - the authorities assuming one thing and not giving victims the support they need.
This is the end of this week’s documentary list! Let me know what you’re watching, and what documentaries you’d like to see recaps on.
